Unexpected events challenge a fifth-grader’s determination to seize the peace and happiness that have eluded her and her mother through no fault of their own

With the final days of fifth grade behind her, Mardella arrives at Haven, a ramshackle senior living facility where her mom has a new job and where they are to live. Her emotions range from despair and anxiety to fear and hopelessness. But hold on – in Mardella author Valerie Biel draws a rich and multi-faceted character who will surely endear her to middle-grade audiences. Mardella also embraces her natural curiosity, the need to form friendships, and the desire to make the best of her situation for the sake of her mother, whom she loves dearly and wants to protect.

Mardella’s journey toward the life of peace and happiness that she desires for herself and her mother takes a few entertaining twists and turns along the way. Her desire to make friends of all ages while trying to win over the resident curmudgeon forces her to think creatively and contributes to her social successes. Unfortunately for Mardella, the big secret about her past lurks not only in her mind, but manifests in a scary and threatening climax.

Throughout the novel, Biel provides a well-paced and engaging story that is notable for the natural and oftentimes tender dialog between her intergenerational characters. She offers her readers hope, demonstrating that life setbacks are most often temporary. Moreover, the author clearly recognizes the complexities of growing up in dysfunctional households where shame and fear can consume adolescents, and how difficult it is to break through those emotions to seek advice and support.

For young readers who read Haven, they may see themselves in Mardella and that the promise of tomorrow can mean better times.
